THIS IS HARVEY HOOD!
HARVEY IS A HAPPY "SPORTCRUISER" CAMPER!
 |
 |
|
If you own
a SportCruiser then you also are probably feeling like
Harvey Hood. Harvey has a big smile on his face and there is
a good reason. On Sunday September 16, 2007, Harvey Hood
walked away with two trophies at a Wings and Wheels Fly-In
held just outside of Cleveland, OH. The first award Harvey
won was the People's Choice award. And secondly, Harvey also
won Best Factory Built Airplane. Wow! Two awards. We are
impressed Harvey, but for some reason, we knew you would
win. We at Sport Aircraft Works, Inc just wanted to say
"Congratulations again Harvey" for your great insight and
decision into purchasing a superior design and well made
airplane from Czech Aircraft Works. |

In preparation
for my SC3 delivery in August, and in conjunction with
my insurance requirement for a 5 hour checkout and sign
off, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to
do it in Arizona rather than fly all the way to Florida.
LSA Flyers is the dealer for Sport Aircraft Works for
the state of Arizona. Owner Bob McKee is a licensed
Sport Aircraft Repairman. They are currently using a SC1
for instruction and have a SC3 arriving in September.
The CFI at LSA Flyers is Bill McKee (Bob's father is an
ex U.S.A.F. instructor pilot with extensive experience.)
While I come from a many motored-heavy metal aviation
background, I do have a few thousand hours of instructor
time in
them, and thus can appreciate a good CFI.
Not coincidently, I also took the opportunity to check
out a brand new SC3 just delivered to them last week and
went over it with a fine tooth comb (and digital camera)
The improvements CZAW touts are definitely there. Lots
of small ones, but most noticeable to me is the
additional room in the cockpit and the adjustable rudder
pedals.
If you are from the Western USA and are thinking you
would like to get your checkout closer to home, I can
heartily recommend you use LSA Flyers. Bill is a very
thorough and patient instructor and more importantly,
has over 300 hours in the SportCruiser and knows it's
handling characteristics down to a tee. BTW if you
haven't yet flown it, it is indeed as sweet, if not
sweeter than everyone has reported.
Aloha...

Just
to give you all an update, especially those waiting for
their plane...We (Chesapeake Sport Pilot) took delivery
of our plane in early May. We put it into service about
two weeks ago. We already have 58 hours on it. No
problems and flys great. We have huge demand for the
plane but we don't have enough instructors. I have
hired two more instructors. We also need more planes so
we ordered a second SportCruiser.
As for performance, I am seeing about 104-107 kts
cruise. My prop seems to be heavily feathered which
indicates more speed if set for a cruise setting. We
are easily seeing 80 kts with a 500 fpm climb on 85
degree days. Stalls are as advertised, uneventful.
If you are waiting for your plane...keep drooling. This
thing is everything we wanted!

It has been delivered! I picked up Chesapeake Sport
Pilot's SportCruiser yesterday. We flew to Florida
Wednesday night. On Thursday morning I flew with Jim
(their check pilot) and went over the plane. Marketa and
Bob Anderson had all the paper work ready to go. I was
able to process the paper work, test fly the plane and
hit the airways by 10:00 am. Unfortunately, the fires
didn't want to cooperate. We flew from Indiantown (near
West Palm) to Lakeland (near Tampa) to get around some
IFR weather caused mostly by smoke. We flew north to
Gainesville where we hit a wall of smoke. We then turned
east and headed to Jacksonville. This is where the true
test occurred.
Tropical depression Andrea was blowing strong. We landed
at Cecil Field, runway 36L. We had a forty degree
crosswind. Winds were 15 kts gusting to 31 kts at the
time of landing. We landed without flaps. The plane flew
great. We tracked the centerline the entire way down,
flared, and put the plane on the ground without any
problems. We were very impressed.
We then flew to Fayetteville, NC. When we pulled up to
Landmark, the lineman said "is that a new Columbia." The
attention was great!
With headwinds around 40kts out of Florida, the long
range of the aircraft was a definite bonus. We than flew
from Fayetteville to W29, our home base.
This was a long trip, mainly because of the zigzagging
across Florida and Andrea's winds. We flew 4 hours legs.
We burned about 5 gph at 5,100 rpm (I wanted to get
home!). The plane was very comfortable. I have flown a
lot of different aircraft, including many sport planes,
and this was easily one of the most comfortable.
Some of the cool touches: map pockets for the pilot and
co-pilot, box in the center console to hold stuff
(i-pod), adjustable rudder pedals even in flight, great
wing storage, very nice backlighting on the instruments,
outstanding brakes.

Hello CZAW
I picked up my Sport Cruiser N-636SC at Sun N Fun this
past weekend and flew it back to
McKinney, Texas on Monday. The trip was 859 miles, took
9.4 hours with only 2 stops. One leg was 4.5 hours.
The airplane exceeds my expectations. It meets or
exceeds all claims and is a fine aircraft. In person it
is bigger than I thought, more comfortable, and better
looking. It was well worth the price and worth the
wait.
For a change of pace, I
wanted to report on the first 20 hours of flying in
Sport Cruiser N 636SC. As I become more familiar with
the characteristics of the aircraft, I become more
impressed with the plane. I have found it both
comfortable and amazingly "quick" from Point A to
Point B. The slow flight envelop is really good as
well. As an aside, the POH was very well done, and
includes my exact panel on the information page for
the panel layout. The CZAW folks have really
delivered what was promised. It continues to exceed
my expectations.
The only down side so
far, is that its like Sun N Fun around my hanger. I
continue to get numerous "drop-in's" every time I open
the doors. I heard a rumor yesterday that 4 more are
in Florida, with either 4 or
6 in route. Perhaps supply is starting to catch up
with demand.
Thank you CZAW

Subject: Update
Chip
I hope things went well at SNF.
We completed the JAR testing today at Cambridge. John
Brownlow thinks the
SportCruiser is the best PFA plane he has ever tested. I sat
in on the
testing as ballast and I have never seen a plane pushed so
hard. We may get
some questions about the elevator trim (possible runaway)
but that's all. The
word will soon get round. I let Marshall's chief test pilot
fly the plane
also and he was full of praise.

Graham Smith

Hi Guys,
Decided last Wednesday (20April)to go to Sun n Fun with Wife
(Bank manager) met all the State side crew from SC and had a
real good time. We were invited to Indiantown where they are
based to fly the airplane they have, and after a pretty
early start on arrival we were introduced to a Guy who was
waiting for his SC to be delivered the next day.
Then I met Jim the SC demonstrator who pre-flighted the SC
and invited me to join him for a fly. Well I didn't need
asking twice!
We sat in the Massive cockpit and Jim reached over to a
cable under my side of the dash and said "put a foot between
the rudders and pull them back to suit your position. Two
seconds later I am sitting very comfortably with the pedals
very easily underfoot, simple!
After a long taxi to the runway which served as a nice warm
up for the engine and gave Jim the time to run through the
Dynon instruments for me we lined up on 13 and then Jim
explained we were only going to use the first third of the
runway (I thought he was just doing a clearing turn?)
Throttle open, just breath on the right brake to hold
straight against the crosswind until the rudder comes in to
effect and….. holy @&*%$ we are airborne and climbing like
an elevator! What followed for the next 15 minutes was a
display of what happens when you abuse or miss handle this
aircraft…Nothing!! Jim demonstrated Clean stall,
Dirty stall, Very steep turns Left and Right, Cruise speed,
Economic cruise, Slow flying and Full Power on stall (which
I can say was more like being in a helicopter lying on your
back ).
Then the BEST bit……Jim says YOUR airplane!
Started with some gentle turns and cruising around to get
the feel, but it became obvious immediately, THIS is where I
was meant to be! Everything just falls into your hands
…….the throttle is automatic, the trim is very easy to
adjust both in pitch and roll, and once it is trimmed
properly you just relax in your ample seat and enjoy the
view and accept that Life is GOOD!
Guys, a few of my friends said I must be MAD (they are
friends) to buy an aircraft without first flying it and I
have to say I did have some doubts, But, I now think it was
one of my more sensible decisions in life because quite
simply the plane is awesome!!!!
