NOSE GEAR LEG
AND MUFFLER CRACKS |
Latest SportCruiser Safety Directives
and Technical Bulletins/Retrofit Authorizations from The Manufacturer |
|
What is
corrected in the Nose-Gear leg and Exhaust Muffler problem
in SD-SC-007?
Nose gear
The main concern with the nose gear is the shock absorber
attachment bracket. This bracket has a tendency to develop
small cracks on the forward edge of the bracket during
service life. During our refurbishing process we completely
removed this bracket and replaced it with a heavier cage
bracket along with additional reinforcement to eliminate
this problem in the future.
The second problem area which develops over time is the
bending of the gear leg 3” behind the wheel pivot shaft.
This bending is evident by using straight edge ruler across
this area. During our re manufacturing we strengthen this
area with doubler in such a way to eliminate this
problem. We also have the ability to straighten out the gear
leg as long as the bend is less than 8 degrees.
Muffler cracking
Muffler tail pipe has shown its vulnerability to vibration
by cracking at the attachment point. Not all mufflers will
crack initially but eventually it seems to happen. Our re
manufacturing totally eliminates this problem by not only
reinforcing the attachment area by internally attaching the
tail pipe to the muffler structure. This should eliminate
any future cracking problems. Additionally there are cracks
showing on the header tubes coming out of the muffler. These
can be reinforced as
needed.
Please inspect your mufflers for cracks every 25 hours and
the nose gear and exhaust muffler should be inspected per
Safety Directive SD-SC-007.
It's easy to see this initial crack forming as the paint
will show signs of movement in front of the bracket.

| FAQ |
AIRFRAME Q1. My Steering
bar axle-collar attachments on the nose gear show signs of
fatigue and/or have broken-off. Where can I get replacement
steering collar attachments for the nose gear?
A. Contact us through email at
techquestions@sportaircraftworks.com to place an order
for a new pair of fairing attachments.
Q2. My Main Gear Wheel fairing
outer-attach-brackets have fallen off or have cracked at the weld.
Where can I get replacement wheel fairing attachments?
A. Contact us through email at
techquestions@sportaircraftworks.com to place an order for
a new pair of fairing attachments.
ELECTRICAL
Q1. My strobes do not seem
to work. What's the problem?
A. During the engine
starting phase of the aircraft it is possible to have left the
strobes switch in the 'ON' position. If this is the
case, it is possible that damage was caused to your strobe
driver box. It is clearly stated in the SportCruiser P.O.H.
checklist to turn 'OFF' all electrical equipment during engine
starting due to the electro-magnetic field effect of the starter solenoid.
Q2. I recently removed my
Strobe Driver Box to send it in for repair and now I notice my
NAV lights are not working. Why is this happening?
A. The Ground terminals for the strobes and the position
lights share a common connection point to the airframe. Chances
are when the strobe ground wire was removed, the NAV ground wire
was also removed without reconnecting the NAV/POSITION ground
wire back to the airframe (via the screw and nut that holds the
one corner of the strobe driver box). Simply Reconnect the BLACK
Ground wire of the NAV/POSITION lights only, located near the
area of the Strobe Driver Box to the airframe (where the bare
shiny metal surface is exposed). Also check and be sure that the
power-supply lead for the strobe driver box has been taped off
so that it cannot come into contact with ground.
